Message from Outreach Chair Alexis Jenofsky

From an early age, I loved sharing stories and connecting with people. I found a passion for the stage and strongly believed that theatre would be my entire life. While studying theatre at an arts high school in Philadelphia, I quickly discovered my love for directing. As a director, I had the ability to set the tone of a production and shape the narrative we shared with our audience. What I didn’t realize back then was how those lessons in storytelling and leadership would influence the career I have today.

Unlike others who step directly into the communications field, my path took a few unexpected turns. As a first-generation college student, I studied both theatre and arts administration, uncovering a variety of passions along the way. I took those interests abroad, interning with the English Touring Theatre Company in London, where I strengthened my communication skills, expanded the company’s social media presence, and helped manage its brand. I quickly realized how much I loved telling positive stories and shaping narratives—even the challenging ones.

After London, I pursued another passion: teaching. I spent a summer in India at a residential school, educating students while also taking on administrative responsibilities. That experience was eye-opening and helped me grow in ways I never expected.

When my time in college ended, I faced the same reality so many young professionals do—figuring out my next step. I accepted a role in the undergraduate admissions office at Albright College, where I worked for two-and-a-half years before becoming the Assistant Director of Admissions at Lehigh University. At Lehigh, I joined the Communications team for the admissions office, dedicating countless hours to crafting messaging, reading college applications, and contributing to the school’s growth. While there, I also began my master’s degree in educational leadership. I knew my long-term goal was to work in K-12 education, though I wasn’t sure exactly where I fit.

Eventually, an opportunity opened to move into a middle school setting, where I taught Theatre Arts and English. Stepping into a K-12 school felt like the right move, and in addition to teaching, I took on the responsibility of running the school’s social media page and assisting with crisis communications. Teaching during the COVID years was an unforgettable experience, and through it, I realized that while I loved working in schools, my true passion was in communications.

So, I took a leap and started applying for K-12 district communications roles. I was incredibly fortunate when the Upper Perkiomen School District team took a chance on me, bringing me in as their Communications Specialist. Over the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to lead some exciting initiatives: establishing a brand guide with an updated look, introducing and implementing ParentSquare, managing communications during a network outage crisis, and much more. Now, as the Director of Communications for Upper Perkiomen, I can confidently say that I love what I do. Public education is something I’m deeply passionate about, and as communicators, we have the privilege of telling our district’s story and celebrating the incredible things happening in our schools every day.

While my career has taken me into the world of communications, I’ve never left behind my love for theatre and education. In addition to my work at Upper Perkiomen, I direct musicals and plays for an afterschool program at a local high school, continuing to share my passion for storytelling and the arts with students.

If there’s one piece of advice I’d share, it’s this: take risks on your journey and find what truly makes you come alive.

Sincerely,

Alexis Jenofsky
